Participate in a Research Study!

Our research focuses on answering questions about human behavior. So, we need the help of people like you to gather the data we need to better understand how people perceive and react in various situations.

A list of the studies currently being conducted in the AVC Lab are listed below.

Participation in any study is voluntary.

To participate in a lab experiment, click on the Schedule an Appointment button to reserve your spot. You will be taken to a Microsoft Bookings page with a list of available spots. Select the time slot you would like to reserve so we know when to expect you.

Analysis of Large Language Model Conceptual Space Using Multidimensional Scaling

This study focuses on how people represent certain concepts in their mind and if we can apply a similar analysis to large language AI models (LLMs). This project will help us better understand how LLM’s, like ChatGPT, organize information and how similar this is to how people represent that information.

As a participant in this study, you would be asked to:

  1. Complete a basic demographic information questionnaire.

  2. Rate the dissimilarity of various concepts on a scale from 1 (very similar) to 9 (very dissimilar). You will rate the similarity of concepts for three different categories.

  3. Read a short passage.

Participation takes about 15 minutes.

To be eligible for the study you must:

  • Be at least 18 years of age.

  • Proficient in English.

The Effect of Automation on Visual Search Decisions

This study focuses on how people make decisions when given information about an upcoming search task. This experiment can be done online on an Internet browser; however, this experiment *cannot* be done on a mobile device (smart phone or tablet).

Participation in this research study will involve:

  • Search for specific letters amongst a group of non-target distractor letters.

  • Complete this search task with a useful, but imperfect, warning aid to help in the search task.

  • Provide basic information about yourself (age, sex, race/ethnicity)

Participation takes about 20 minutes.

Participation in this study is voluntary.

You can be a part of this research study if you:

  • Are 18 years old or older

  • Have normal vision or corrected-to-normal vision (that is, can see normally while wearing glasses or contacts)

For questions, or if you would like additional information to assist you in reaching a decision about participation, please feel free to contact Dr. Scarince at Collin.Scarince@tamucc.edu
